About the Destination

What Is
Mont Blanc?

At 4,808 metres, Mont Blanc is the highest peak in the Alps and in all of Western Europe. Straddling the border between France and Italy, it towers above the Chamonix Valley — a place where glaciers spill from jagged ridges and the horizon never fails to stop you in your tracks.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc sits at the mountain's feet at 1,035m altitude, a town that has built its identity entirely around adventure. It hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and has been drawing mountaineers, skiers, and thrill-seekers ever since.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You
Need To Know

What is Mont Blanc?
Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, standing at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft). It sits on the France-Italy border, directly above the town of Chamonix in the Haute-Savoie department of France. It was first summited in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard.
Where is Chamonix?
Chamonix (officially Chamonix-Mont-Blanc) is in southeastern France, in the Haute-Savoie department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It sits at approximately 1,035 metres altitude in the Chamonix Valley, 80km from Geneva and 620km from Paris.
What is the best time of year to visit Chamonix?
Chamonix is a year-round destination. Summer (June–September) is best for hiking, the Tour du Mont Blanc, climbing, and paragliding. Winter (December–April) is best for skiing, snowboarding, the Vallée Blanche glacier run, and off-piste adventures. Shoulder months (May, October–November) are quieter and cheaper but many lifts are closed.
How do you get to Chamonix from Geneva?
Geneva Airport is the closest international airport, about 90km away. Options include: the SAT Mont Blanc Express bus (approximately €20, 1.5 hours), shared shuttle services (€30–50, book in advance), private transfer (€120–180), or rental car via the A40/E25 motorway. The Mont Blanc Express train from Martigny (Switzerland) is also scenic but slower.
Is Chamonix expensive?
Chamonix is a premium Alpine resort but has options across all budgets. A mid-range dinner costs €20–40 per person. Ski passes run approximately €60–70/day or €320–380 for 6 days. Accommodation ranges from €30/night in a hostel dorm to €500+/night in a luxury chalet. Off-peak visits in May or October can be significantly cheaper.
Can you see Mont Blanc without climbing it?
Yes — the Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 3,842m in just 20 minutes, giving you face-to-face views of Mont Blanc's summit and the surrounding massif. The Montenvers railway, Plan de l'Aiguille, and Brévent viewpoints also give spectacular views without any technical climbing.
